Abstract
This article explores the cooperating teacher's role as a central feature of the student teaching experience and as it relates to the cooperating teacher's own career. Cooperating teachers may fashion their own definition of roles because of general or ambiguous descriptions of their responsibilities, and they typically exert considerable influence on the student teaching experience. In addition, serving as a cooperating teacher can be an important element of the career cycle of teachers by giving them opportunities to validate their own expertise, enhance their knowledge of current trends and innovations in curriculum design and teaching, and promote self‐reflection on their work as teachers.
