Abstract
The Scandinavian countries are a small market for educational software. Therefore the Ministry of Education in Sweden formed a special software group in order to analyze and evaluate existing software and also to find cost-effective ways of producing new pieces of good software for education. This work was done in close cooperation with Norway, Denmark, and Finland. Through all the work we had to look closely into problems of portability. This article deals with some of our efforts and uses our common design method as a starting point for the discussion. The main philosophy in Scandinavia is to share ideas and intellectual tools and jointly develop and use efficient software tools to enhance a standardized and cost-effective production of software for our schools. Most of the experiences mentioned have come about through work in courses in software design arranged by the Nordic Council for Education, in the Educational Software Group at the Ministry of Education, and at the Educational Resource Center in Gothenburg.
