Abstract
The Language Fantasy Approach (LFA), originally developed as an approach for reading instruction, is presented here as an effective therapeutic intervention for children who demonstrate fears and who need to improve social skills. The LFA is demonstrated and explained as a three-stage process that involves children creating a myth in which their story characters meet and overcome challenges. A group of three or four children learn to cooperate and gain courage as their story characters work together to deal with monsters and other villains. Children learn to take appropriate risks and to realize the consequences initially in their stories and then in their own lives.
