Abstract
The number of adolescent girls who have entered the juvenile justice system has steadily increased since the 1990s. Over 90% of girls who enter the juvenile justice system are likely to have had at least one traumatic experience. Specific factors that influence a girl's pathway toward delinquent/risky behavior have been identified. Yet, few programs and/or interventions target the specific treatment needs of females. Through qualitative analysis, this project sought to continue the development of a guided therapy workbook for girls, aged 12–15, who are both involved in the juvenile justice system and have experienced distressing or life altering events. An exploration of the relevant research literature supported the intent of this project. Girls, aged 12–15, were solicited to participate in a focus group providing feedback regarding a modified version of the “My Girlhood: My Story of Growing Up, Where I Come From, Where I Am Today, and Where I Want to Go With My Life” workbook. A thematic analysis of their written and audio-recorded feedback revealed themes related to the workbook's appeal, reflective opportunities, dynamics of trust, and future orientation. Finally, the participants provided recommendations for the workbook and advocated that the workbook could be beneficial to all girls regardless of their personal history.
