EXPCON ‐ a new approach for automatic control of the substrate flow rate in chemostat and fed‐batch processes

Summary

In biotechnological processes requiring a continuous or repeated substrate supply, an automatic control of the feed rate is desirable. This should be able to react appropriate on varying properties of the microorganisms, changes in substrate quality or other operating parameters.

With EXPCON a new approach is proposed for such an automatic control of the substrate feed rate. The approach is based on a pulsed feeding strategy in combination with an intelligent evaluation of measurements by a logical model of the process. The logical model can make exact statements about the actual substrate limitation of the microorganisms. This knowledge then can be translated into a proper control action. Within this approach no balancing is needed and there are only low requirements on the measurement accuracy.

The practical application of the approach is demonstrated by some examples of different processes.
