Abstract

An expert system based on fuzzy reasoning is presented as a convenient tool for the supervisory control of biotechnological processes. An object oriented Smalltalk based expert system has been developed and applied in glucoamylase fermentation. The hierarchic rule‐ and frame‐based system operates on‐line in real‐time. It is capable of handling imprecise data and subjective knowledge. The system will predict and diagnose faults and has some capabilities for fault correction in process control.
