ABSTRACT
This paper investigates the elastic stability of multiply braced cantilevered and simply supported monosymmetric I-beams. On the basis of the Timoshenko energy approach, a generalized Rayleigh quotient is derived. The buckling capacity can then be obtained by solving an optimization problem in which the Rayleigh quotient (the objective function) is minimized with respect to the twist displacement function. Various features of the behavior of braced beams are analyzed.
