Stability of the Partially Submerged Standing Column

Pages 233-240 | Received 01 Jan 1986, Published online: 03 Apr 2007

ABSTRACT

A vertical column of uniform cross section and density is clamped at the bottom end. The column is also partially immersed in a fluid. Stability (bifurcation) criteria are determined by combinations of Bessel and Airy functions. The influence of density ratio and fluid level on stability boundaries is found.
