ABSTRACT
The theory of the optimal layout of least-weight grillages (beam systems) is extended to allow for the cost of supports with both vertical reactions and clamping moments. Closed-form analytical solutions are obtained by means of surprisingly simple geometrical constructions that provide a unified treatment of grillages with various types of boundary conditions. The extended theory is illustrated with a simple example, and the problem of optimal support locations is discussed.
