ABSTRACT

Reflection and transmission of random waves at the junction of two elastic rods are considered. Equations for the scattered force and displacement waves are presented. The mean and mean square values for the scattered force waves due to a broadband incident wave are determined in the cases of a rigid joint without mass, a rigid joint with mass, and a non-dissipative flexible joint with mass. Results are interpreted in terms of the filtering characteristics of the joints. From the perspective of the transmitted wave, the rigid joint with mass acts as a low-pass filter. From the perspective of the reflected wave, the rigid joint with mass acts as a high-pass filter that completely eliminates the mean or DC component. The flexible joint is identical to the rigid joint with mass in terms of the mean values of the reflected and transmitted waves. The flexibility of the joint influences only the mean square values of the scattered waves. This analysis provides a methodology that can be used to study random wave scattering in more complicated structural configurations.
