Denise Phe-Funchal (Guatemala, 1977) is a sociologist and a writer. She is the author of four books, including the short story collection Buenas costumbres (2011) and her latest novel Ana sonríe (2015), from which the following excerpt was taken. She has been a featured author at book festivals in Germany and Central and South America, and her work has been included in anthologies in Germany, Argentina, and the United States.
