Notes on contributors

Rubén Darío

“From the North,” first seen in print in the newspaper El Heraldo de Costa Rica in 1892, and “The Chiffon Scepter,” published in Darío’s 1907 edition of essays, Parisiana, represent the Nicaraguan’s continued dialogue with American culture, politics, and its influence on Latin America. The former is an early expression of Darío’s forceful antagonism towards U.S. dominance, hypocrisy, and aggression towards the South. The latter uses a more satirical tone in the futile attempts by the U.S. to spread its cultural influence across the Atlantic.
