Conceição Evaristo

Conceição Evaristo (Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, 1946) is an acclaimed Afro-Brazilian poet, novelist, and short-story writer. She grew up in a very poor family and worked as a maid as she studied to be a teacher, later graduating from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. She has a PhD in comparative literature from Universidade Federal Fluminense. Her poetry and fiction focus on the plight of poor Afro-Brazilians, racism, and sexism, as well as on the strength derived from Brazil’s African heritage. Evaristo’s works have appeared in English, French, and Italian. Her collection of stories Olhos d’água (Eyes of Water) received the prestigious Jabuti Award in 2015, and in 2019 the Jabuti Award committee nominated her Literary Person of the Year. The following is from her Poemas da recordação e outros movimentos (2008; Poems of Remembrance and Other Movements).
