Abstract

A transient technique for measuring the thermal conductivities of unconsolidated powders is described. The apparatus is fully automated and allows measurements to be made conveniently from room temperature to 800 K and in various void-fitting gases at pressures up to several atmospheres. Results are presented for the effective thermal conductivity of powdered iron carbide in several gases and the data are compared with the predictions of several simple models.
