Using Mobile Devices in Physical Education to Enhance Learning and Physical Activity for At-Risk Girls

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to illustrate how a physical education program uses mobile devices to motivate at-risk girls attending an urban charter school. Permitting students to use mobile devices in physical education gives students a “technological freedom” that has been removed in other contexts. The apps described in this article helped provide guidance and feedback to students, to enhance the structural and motivational components of the activity designs. The examples presented were successful for this group of students in this circumstance; however, the potential is great for other teachers to learn from their experience.
