Wiffle Ball: Turning a Backyard Favorite into an Appropriate Physical Education Unit

 

Abstract

Wiffle ball is a classic game that has been played by people of all ages. Although there is a potential for inactivity due to limited opportunities to be actively engaged, increased activity time and overall development can occur through appropriate teaching methods. This article explores teaching wiffle ball using the sport education model. The potential for maximizing student learning and enjoyment are discussed, along with suggestions for setting up an appropriate season of play in physical education.

Notes

Work on skills/strategies that are beneficial to the team

Provide general team leadership in a positive, encouraging manner

Meet with other captains to discuss issues related to class

Determine rules related to the game of wiffle ball

Calculate individual statistics after each competition day

Provide the total of each team member's statistics to the teacher after each competition day

Maintain a scoresheet for one of the teams

Work with the scorekeeper to keep an accurate score

Design team logo

Show creativity in the design of team jerseys

Bring stat sheets for each competition day and know which teams are to play

Have stat sheets filled out according to the coach's request for each competition day

Decide on appropriate awards for team members

Create awards to be given to team members

Collect equipment needed prior to class

Make sure all equipment has been returned

Collect the warm-up card from the teacher and lead the team through the challenge

Work one of the following positions: home plate, first base, second base, or third base

Attempt to make accurate calls according to position

Prepare the field for game play

Assist with issues that may occur during game play

Work with a broadcast team to report the game to observers

Announce game situations (i.e., who is batting, stats, score, etc.)

Practice the skills of throwing, catching, striking, etc.

Run the bases, defensive directional response to hit ball

Use tactical skills in a competitive situation

Develop strategy beneficial to team

Improvement of skill that can lead to a desire to be physically active outside of class

Contribute to team points by completing team and duty roles

Display good sportsmanship in an appropriate competitive environment

Reflection on the enjoyment of wiffle ball participation

Team affiliation produces positive social interaction through roles other than that of player
