Self‐concepts and self‐presentations of males and females: Similarities and differences

Pages 55-62 | Published online: 21 May 2009

Abstract

Studies comparing males and females have not examined the relationship between self‐concept and self‐presentation. In this study, one hundred subjects described themselves using a checklist and then told a narrative that they frequently tell others; the narratives were content analyzed for self‐defining characteristics. The results reveal that males and females have similar self‐concepts, but present different, more gender‐typed selves in their narratives.
