Abstract
In order to determine whether workers and residents were exposed to PCB during a soil clean-up operation, we decided to sample not only airborne PCB vapour, but also for PCB that may be adsorbed onto airborne soil particles. Air samplers were placed close to the excavation site and at the boundaries of the property. Meteorological data were assembled to assist in the interpretation of the findings. It was found that the mean levels of PCB adsorbed on to airborne soil particles were low in relation to the applicable air quality guideline, and similar to the airborne PCB vapour level. The levels decreased rapidly away from the excavation site. An increase in wind speed resulted in a decrease of the airborne levels, whereas, an increase in air temperature resulted in an increase of the airborne levels.
