Notes

1. For example, when Pierre Benoît, author of L’Atlantide, or Atlantida in the English translation, was accused of plagiarizing Henry Rider Haggard’s She, Jung acknowledged the following alternatives: the visionary mode – the same archetypal forces influenced both authors; or cryptomnesia – the Frenchman read and absorbed Haggard’s tale of immortal love for an immortal woman, forgot having read the source, and then incorporated its details unconsciously. My book Four Novels in Jung’s 1925 Seminar: Literary Discussion and Analytical Psychology furthers the discussion of the plagiarism charge, finds that “a definitive answer to the plagiarism question remains elusive” (41), but notes holes in the case advanced by Benoît’s defenders.
