The authors, Abhijit Gupta and Arup Kumar Das, are lecturers at the Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research (SQC & OR) Unit of Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta. In addition to the routine teaching activities at the Institute, they acted as consultants to various Indian industries in the field of total quality management, ISO 9000 system implementation, SQC techniques, and so forth.
