Abstract
In the 20th century, a relatively poor understanding of viral hepatitis has progressed to recognition of a veritable “alphabet soup” of hepatitis viruses. A number of mysteries remain, however, despite this remarkable progression. Antiviral agents, vaccines, and methods to prevent disease recurrence after liver transplantation are only a few of the advances developed in the past decade. This article reviews recent developments in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of viral hepatitis.
