Abstract

The successful treatment of a 65-year-old man who has profound unintentional hypothermia is described; a femoral-femoral extracorporeal rewarming technique is used. The pathophysiological changes associated with hypothermia and their management are reviewed. The aggressive treatment of profound hypothermia is paramount because of the potential for complete recovery despite a catastrophic presentation.
