Abstract

The error vector magnitude (EVM) is extensively applied as a measure of transmitters’ performance. In this paper, the effect of phase-locked loop (PLL) bandwidth on EVM is examined. The relationship between EVM and PLL based local oscillator phase noise is analyzed, and a simplified expression is used to evaluate the EVM. Dependence of EVM on loop bandwidth is investigated. Analytical and experimental results show that choosing the optimal loop bandwidth of PLL would minimize the EVM of transmitter.
