Abstract
In this study, the MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm for imaging of small electromagnetic inhomogeneities in two-dimensional space is considered. We identify the structure of MUSIC-type imaging functionals, which are often adopted in inverse scattering problems, by establishing a relationship between the imaging functional and Bessel functions of integer order of the first kind. This relationship illuminates certain properties of MUSIC, as well as explaining some undiscovered phenomena. The results of some numerical simulations using noisy data are presented in order to support our investigation.
