Abstract

Simulation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging of ship-generated internal wave wake in stratified ocean is conducted through the combination of scattering and modulation effects under the background of wind waves. With the derived surface velocity of internal wave wake from the velocity potential, a reconstruction of the wave elevation is implemented by means of the frequency decomposition technique. Based on the hydrodynamic model, the facet scattering model is presented for the fully polarimetric backscattering and the velocity bunching imaging model is applied to the SAR image simulation of surface waves with an embedded internal wave wake. Numerical simulations show that the wave patterns of internal wave wake, which modulates the distribution of Bragg waves on sea surface, are closely dependent on ship speed. And the conditions are classified for a good visibility of internal wave wake in SAR image. Besides, the great agreement with measurement strongly verifies the validity of the simulation.
