Design of a 352.2 MHz, 100 kW CW power klystron

ABSTRACT

A 352.2 MHz klystron with an output power of 100 kW CW is under development at CSIR-CEERI for charged particle accelerator application. The paper presents various design results achieved through simulation of the electron gun, radio frequency (RF)  interaction structure and collector for the device. Based on the design results, a beam stick tube has been developed and hot tested for which the test results are given. A study for the design of RF interaction structure of this klystron has been carried out to get the optimized design parameters using 1-D code AJDISK and MAGIC (2D/3D). The intermediate RF cavities have been developed and characterized for their designed frequencies and the results of cold RF measurements are given.

Deepender Kant

Deepender Kant is working as a senior scientist in the CSIR-Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CEERI), Pilani, India. He obtained his BE (Hons.) in Electronics & Communication Engineering from University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, MTech. (Hons.) in Electronics Engineering from IIT-BHU, Varansai and PhD (Engg.) from MNIT, Jaipur. His current research interests include design and development of microwave components, systems and high power microwave tubes. He is a life member of Indian Physics Association, IETE and VEDA society.

L. M. Joshi

Lalit Mohan Joshi had worked as a chief scientist at CSIR-CEERI, Pilani. He did his MSc degree in Physics from Kumaon University, Nainital, and PhD degree in Electronics Engineering from Institute of Technology, BHU, Varanasi. He had visited Lancaster University (UK), FZK, Karlsruhe, and DESY Hamburg (Germany), Stanford University (USA) and Sweden as visiting scientist, where he worked in R&D related to CCTWT, Gyrotron and Klystrons. He is a life fellow of IETE, Indian Vacuum Society, IFTA, and Indian Physics Association.

Rakesh Meena

Rakesh Meena is working as a Technical Officer at CSIR-CEERI. He received his Diploma in Electronics Engineering from Board of Technical Education, Rajasthan, in 1997. He is involved in the development of high-power vacuum microwave devices, particularly in pulsed and CW klystrons. His areas of interest are fabrication of high power microwave tubes and vacuum electronic devices, hot and cold characterization of the high-power microwave tubes, etc.

Bijendra Kumar

Bijendra Kumar is working as a Technical Officer at CSIR-CEERI. He received his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Board of Technical Education, Uttar Pradesh, in 2006. He is involved in the fabrication of various sub-assemblies of microwave devices such as klystron, TWT, Magnetron etc. His areas of interest are modeling and optimization of devices, thermal and structural analysis of the high-power microwave devices etc.

V. S. Rawat

Vikram Singh Rawat is working as a Technical Officer at CSIR-CEERI. He received his Diploma in Electronics Engineering from Board of Technical Education, Rajasthan, in 2007 and BE degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur, in 2010. He is involved in the testing of high-power vacuum microwave devices. His areas of interest are modeling and characterization of the microwave components.

V. Janyani

Dr Vijay Janyani is a Professor of Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) Jaipur. He obtained BE and ME degrees from MREC (now MNIT), and PhD from University of Nottingham, UK under Commonwealth Scholarship. He is a Senior Member of IEEE USA and presently the Chairman of IEEE Rajasthan (India) Subsection. His current research interests include fibre optics, photonics, optical networks, numerical modeling, nonlinear photonics, photonic crystal-based photovoltaic and devices and all-optical systems.
