The relation between egg hatching and photoperiod in Amphinemura sp. (Plecoptera)

Abstract

One of the events affected by photoperiod in insect life cycle is egg dormancy. The duration of egg period largely depends on temperature and length of light and dark cycle. An insect species that has no egg dormancy and a short egg period might also somehow be affected by photoperiod. In this study, Amphinemura sp. eggs were incubated at 20 °C under four conditions: 24D, 8L16D, 12L12D, 16L8D. Egg period was shorter and egg hatching rate on the first hatching day was higher under 8L16D and 16L8D. Egg hatching rate on the first hatching day in the morning was higher under LD8:16 and LD16:8, and lower under 12L12D. The time-lag to egg hatching was suggested to exist depending on the light condition.
