Abstract
Visual examination of the vaginal orifice has been used, in mature female guinea pig, to establish, for one part, the total duration of the ovarian cycle, and, secondly, the respective lengths, within the cycle, of its periods of vaginal opening and of vaginal closure. A new statistical method has been worked out which permits to foresee the durations of closure and opening of the vaginal orifice by reference to the durations of the corresponding periods registered during the course of the preceding estrous cycle. Statistically significant correlations were established between the duration either of the closed periods, or the open periods, of two consecutive cycles. It was also demonstrated that total cycle duration is a function of the length of the closed period.
