Diel morphological changes in the photoreceptors of Lycosa tarentula (Araneae, Lycosidae)

Abstract

Diel cytological modifications of photoreceptors in all eyes of the lycosid spider Lycosa tarentula were analysed. A rhythmicity of these modifications, particular to each type of eyes was shown . A demonstration of circadian rhythmicity has been attempted through twelve‐hour prolongations of the scotophase or the photophase. Both experiments greatly affected the normal periodicity of membrane changes. The diel pattern of activities of Lycosa tarentula could be to some extent correlated to the changes of rhabdoms. Site for a circadian clock in the spider brain has been suggested.
