The nature of linguistic units

Abstract

A linguistic entity can be considered to be a linguistic unit if it (1) can be (operationally) isolated from its environment relatively well; (2) has at least a vague identity; (3) functions in at least one control cycle; and (4) meets the requirements of the members of the language community.
