Pages 222-231 | Published online: 21 Jul 2008

Abstract

In the present paper the frequency of verb forms in several English corpora is analysed and different hypotheses concerning the ‘law of preference’, the dependence of the realisation of forms on frequency and functional style, as well as questions of proximity of verbs and styles, and their classification are discussed. The results can be used for teaching English as a second language.
