A text linguistic hypothesis of G.K. Zipf

Pages 244-251 | Published online: 21 Jul 2008

Abstract

G.K. Zipf s hypothesis of even distribution of effort along a text is understood as a hypothesis of uniform distribution of the sizes of intervals between two tokens of a type over the available interval positions. The suggested hypothesis is tested on two samples, differing in data collection methods. The first test confirms the hypothesis, the second test raises methodological problems.
