Abstract
The essential ideas underlying the avant‐garde music of the sixties, when put into some sort of order, clearly parallel those of the traditional nondual philosophies of India, China, etc.
20th Century musical developments, seen in this unfamiliar context, suggest the use of a Wheel Model for analysis of the nondual total field beyond (but including) music, or “Metamusic”. At the centre (hub) of the wheel: stasis, minimal musics, simplicity, drone, Om and meditation;‐ at the circumference (rim): dynamis, intermedia, multiplicity, life sounds and activities; connecting the two (spokes): the various conventional music systems of Europe, the world, the future.
Some implications of the Metamusic concept for music education are briefly suggested.
