The socio‐economic position of contemporarry art music in Europe

La position socioculturelle de la musique savante contemporaine

Abstract

This paper draws attention to several shortcomings of “avantgarde classical” music: the fact that it has not freed itself from the rituals of traditional concert life, its recent “neoromantic” submission to traditional aesthetic ideals, and its refusal to be inspired by the sensuousness and vitality of its “rival”: rock‐music.
