A brief review of cycle helmet effectiveness

Pages 51-57 | Accepted 02 Feb 1994, Published online: 17 Apr 2007

Abstract

Injuries from cycle accidents are a worldwide phenomenon and there is compelling evidence in favour of helmet use in reducing at least a major part of these injuries, namely severe head injuries. This paper discusses briefly the epidemiological picture of injuries to cyclists and results of some studies into the effectiveness of cycle helmets as one of a series of measures to reduce the severity of injuries to cyclists.
