Abstract
More than five percent of the medically treated accidents in the home and during leisure in the Netherlands are cases of entrapment. The most common type of entrapment is the entrapment of fingers between doors in houses. A review of the literature showed that little has been written on the prevention of these accidents. A survey was therefore conducted among victims of door entrapment. Via a mail questionnaire, data were obtained on characteristics of the doors involved, social and material circumstances, and possibilities of prevention. It was possible to create a number of entrapment scenarios. With the help of these, attempts were made to assess the effectiveness of safer door design and the installation of door safety devices. It was concluded that strips to shield the hinge side of doors and door slam devices that prevent the door from moving, are the most effective ones. Doors will be safer if sharp edges can be prevented. Further research is recommended to develop criteria and test methods with respect to the dangers of entrapment.
