Abstract
In this short communication, a report is presented on European collaboration in the field of consumer safety and the challenges for enhanced cooperation in the framework of the European Union. Much of the analyses rest on reports published in recent years as well as the outcome of the European Convention on Consumer Safety organized by ECOSA in Barcelona, April 1997.
It is concluded that European business as well as European authorities have an important role to play in achieving a safer Europe for its citizens. The European Commission in particular must play a leardership role in that respect by setting the mission and objectives and by establishing the much needed networks for effective policy implementation.
