I Can See Clearly Now, the Data’s Shown: Data Visualization Insights from Podcast Contest

Abstract

This update to a previous Chance article describes the data set used in a recent Stats + Stories data visualization contest, explain how the data was made available for classroom use, reports on the five finalists for the data visualization contest, and reveals the winner. Variables included names of guests and their locations, panelists on the Stats + Stories side, episode format (long, short), episode description (paragraph of text) and the URL for the episode. The five finalists in the data visualization contest make good use of this information.

A. John Bailer

John Bailer is “the stats guy” and co-creator of Stats + Stories. He is also a professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of Statistics at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He is the former president of the International Statistical Institute and previously served on the ASA Board of Directors.

Rosemary Pennington

Rosemary Pennington is “the moderator” of Stats + Stories and an associate professor of journalism in Miami University’s Department of Media, Journalism, & Film. Her research interests include new media and society, media and identity, and the representation of minorities in media.
