Calls and reproductive behaviour of the water frogs of Damascus, Syria (Amphibia: Anura: Rana bedriagae Camerano, 1882)

Abstract

From the vicinity of Damascus, the mating call, three types of territorial calls and transitional calls were recorded in Rana bedriagae in the prespawning season and main spawning season. Four of the nine tested parameters of the mating call are correlated with water temperature. Calling males were numerous in irrigation canals and they formed surprisingly dense populations in small places with superficial vegetation. Despite this density, aggressive interactions among the males were rare.

Kurzfassung

Bei Rana bedriagae aus der nächsten Umgebung von Damaskus wärden während der Vorlaichzeit und Hauptlaichzeit der Paarungsruf, drei Typen von Revierrufen und Übergangsrufe nachgewiesen. Vier der neun überprüften Parameter des Paarungsrufes sind mit der Wassertemperatur korreliert. Rufende Männchen waren in den Bewässerungskanälen zahlreich und hielten Sich in überraschend großer Zahl in kleinen Arealen mit oberflächlicher Vegetation auf. Aggressive Interaktionen der Männchen waren trotz der großen Dichte der Tiere gering.
