Abstract
The occlusal surface elements, roots, and alveolar patterns of molars and features of the soft palate of the dipodids Allactaga tetradactyla, Jaculus jaculus, and Jaculus orientalis are described on the basis of material from Egypt and their taxonomic significance is elucidated. The dipodids are unique among rodents in having either moderate or low crown molars, moderate or low number of cusps, specific roots and alveolar patterns, and a considerably characteristic soft palate structure. On the basis of molar occlusal surface features, J. jaculus and J. orientalis were found to be more closely related to each other and divergent from A. tetradactyla, but according to the upper molar roots and alveolar patterns J. jaculus is nearest to A. tetradactyla. However, the soft palate characters are variable among these dipodids.
