Abstract

A combination of two phase filters is described, which together produce a light beam that can be focused to produce a focal spot with an approximately flat top and with much reduced sidelobes (a top-hat function). There are a variety of potential applications, but our interest lies in the use of this device in astronomical coronagraphy and point spread function engineering in order to aid the detection of extra-solar planet.
