Radio-frequency Excitation of Gas Lasers

Abstract

A theoretical model of a plasma contained within a stripline has been used to predict the behaviour of r.f. pumped discharges. This model indicates a minimum stable value of electron density which varies with excitation frequency. An independent calculation of the electron energy distribution has been used in a rate-equation model to compare the behaviour of r.f. and d.c. helium-neon lasers. The conclusions have been tested against an experimental study.
