Why do girls prefer other academic disciplines to technology? Two possible causes are: (1) They are restricted in their choice by their family background and by female personality characteristics; and (2) their goals generally do not accord with the perspective a university degree can offer. To verify both explanations a comparison was made between first year female students in technology and those in education. The results support some of the predictions about the differences between the two groups in regard to goals and restrictions in choice.
