This study deals with the transition between electrostatics and electrokinetics from two points of view, the historical and psychological. In both cases it is shown that previously acquired knowledge of electrostatics is liable to be a ‘deforming prism’ in the study of electric circuits. We examine the use of ideas from electrostatics during the initial study of current phenomena.
