Abstract

In the present work, some methodologies for study of electric arc stability with covered electrodes in short-circuit metallic transfer mode, reported in science journal articles and books, are analysed. The analysis of this information has revealed: (a) different arc stability evaluation criteria in welding with covered electrodes, in relation to the voltage and current signal parameter under consideration, statistical processing of the variables and the relationships between the results of evaluations with different criteria; (b) insufficient information about the probabilistic distribution and the methodology for the statistical processing of the parameters taken into account, as well as their possible variations under different experimental conditions; (c) insufficient information about the influence of the automatic feed system on the autonomy of the coated electrode during the process. These aspects lead to distortions in the results of the characterization methodology; it is necessary to solve them in order to improve the evaluation of the covered electrodes' electric operability.

Acknowledgements

We would like to thank our colleagues at the Centro de Investigaciones de Soldadura (CIS), and the whole of the international scientific community dealing with welding-related themes, for their collaboration. In particular, we would like to thank Dr Américo Scotti for his disinterested help in the provision of important information for the development of this work. Thanks go also to Dr Ángel Sánchez Roca and Dr Hipólito Carvajal for their unconditional help.
