Abstract

The way in which the metal is transferred from the electrode tip to the weld pool affects the MIG/MAG process productivity and stability, as well as the weld bead geometrical characteristics. Among the modes of metal transfer, a very important parameter to know is the value of the globular spray transition current, which occurs in a narrow band of current and causes considerable changes in the frequency and diameter of the transferred drops and, therefore, the process stability. The transition current was investigated experimentally using a high-speed video camera associated with a new proposed methodology for identifying the transition current applied to binary and ternary mixtures of O2 and CO2 with an Ar base.
