Diagnostic inspections of butt joints in the oldest steel welded bridges in Poland

Abstract

In this paper, the structures of 11 steel welded bridges in Poland are shown. These bridges were constructed between 1929 and 1939. In 7 of those bridges, 15 routine photographic X-ray tests of the butt joints were made. From 136 X-ray pictures, the bad condition of the butt welds and the occurrence of internal cracks in the welds were found. To estimate the future safe usage period of the bridges, examinations of the fatigue strength of the welded butt joints of a similar structure were performed and a stress analysis carried out on them.

Notes

1. Current bridge standards PN-77/S-10050 and PN-82/S-10052 for defectiveness of welded joints assessment is based on PN-87/M-69772. Those standards did not yet introduce an obligation to use European standards: PN-EN 12517:2001 and PN-EN ISO 5817 2007. Therefore, in this paper, the welds defectiveness assessment was specified acc. to PN-87/M-69772, that is for the period of conducted diagnostic tests and defects determination was maintained instead of defective welding.
