Evaluating the strength of single and double resistance spot welds in specimens with centre line offset

Abstract

For technical reasons it is not always possible to place resistance spot welds to close tolerances along a given line in components or specimens. All of the recommended methods of calculating the strength of such welds fail to include the possibility of an additional loading on the spot weld as a result of it being offset from its intended axis of loading. This article reports the results of both theoretical and experimental strength investigations of spot welds exhibiting centre line offset, which led to a user friendly method of determining their strength.
