Abstract
Synopsis: Because of the particular geometrical ratio of the height of a weld seam to the thickness of the material and the mechanical properties of the weld seam, butt welds in thin sheet materials have characteristic properties which cannot be evaluated using general basic rules. A series of investigations is described which were carried out to improve the strength of the structural materials discussed and which help to indicate the effect which the shape of a weld might have on the load carrying capability of a butt welded joint.
