Stress corrosion behaviour of plasma and electron beam welded super duplex stainless steel

Summary

A study was made of the corrosion and stress corrosion behaviour of a super duplex stainless steel (UNS S 32750, thickness = 3 mm), both plasma and electron beam butt welded. The reliability of these joining technologies, not yet widely investigated on this new type of steel, needs to be carefully evaluated, both chemically and mechanically.

With this in mind, free corrosion tests were conducted in sulphuric acid solutions in various chloride concentrations. Using the same solutions, stress corrosion behaviour was investigated (slow strain rate, with a strain rate of 1 × 10-6 sec-1). The critical pitting temperature (CPT) was determined in iron chloride solutions.

Results of experimental tests, conducted on both weld beads and base metal and compared with those achieved on laser weldments, were correlated to the processes and the different microstructures obtained.
